ENDOMETRIOSIS: FROM SYMPTOMS TO ROOT CAUSE.

When painful periods are no longer something you should simply “live with”

WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue resembling the lining of the uterus develops outside the uterus.

It most commonly affects the pelvis and may involve the ovaries, fallopian tubes and tissues around the uterus. In some people, it can affect the bowel, bladder or, more rarely, areas outside the pelvis.

These lesions can contribute to inflammation and scar tissue formation and may cause pain and other symptoms.

Over time, endometriosis can therefore affect much more than menstruation.

What Are the Complications of Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is not simply a condition of painful periods.

When symptoms persist, they can affect several areas of life and health.

1. Chronic pelvic pain

Pain may continue beyond menstruation and can become a recurring or persistent problem.

2. Difficulty conceiving

Endometriosis is associated with infertility. WHO notes that among women experiencing infertility, as many as 25% to 50% may have endometriosis.

3. Ovarian endometriomas

Endometriosis can cause cysts on the ovaries, commonly referred to as endometriomas or “chocolate cysts.”

4. Adhesions and scar tissue

Inflammation associated with endometriosis can contribute to scar tissue and adhesions, which may alter the normal anatomy of pelvic organs.

5. Bowel and urinary problems

When endometriosis affects structures around the bowel or bladder, women may experience pain with bowel movements, urination or other digestive and urinary symptoms.

6. Sexual health problems

Pain during or after intercourse can affect intimacy, relationships and emotional wellbeing.

7. Fatigue and reduced quality of life

Persistent pain, heavy menstrual bleeding and the emotional burden of living with a chronic condition can significantly affect energy, work, studies and everyday activities. Heavy bleeding may also contribute to iron deficiency and fatigue.

8. Emotional and psychological burden

Living with recurring pain, fertility concerns and uncertainty can contribute to anxiety, depression, social isolation and emotional distress.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Endometriosis?

Endometriosis does not look exactly the same in every woman.

Some of the most important symptoms include:

1. Severe menstrual pain

Pain during periods that interferes with normal daily activities.

2. Chronic pelvic pain

Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvis that may continue even after menstruation ends.

3. Heavy or abnormal bleeding

Very heavy menstrual bleeding or unusual bleeding patterns.

4. Pain during or after intercourse

Especially deeper pelvic pain.

5. Pain during bowel movements

Pain that may become particularly noticeable around menstruation.

6. Painful urination

Urinary discomfort or pain, particularly when symptoms follow a cyclical pattern.

7. Bloating and digestive symptoms

Bloating, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea or abdominal discomfort may occur.

8. Difficulty conceiving

Problems becoming pregnant can sometimes be associated with endometriosis.

9. Persistent fatigue

Especially when accompanied by chronic pain or heavy bleeding.

10. Anxiety, low mood or emotional distress

The ongoing physical and social burden of chronic pain can affect emotional wellbeing.

These symptoms can overlap with other conditions, so symptoms alone cannot establish a diagnosis. Persistent or recurring symptoms should be evaluated appropriately.

What Are the Risk Factors?

The exact cause of endometriosis remains unknown.

However, research has identified several factors associated with a greater likelihood of developing the condition.

Family history

Having a close female relative with endometriosis can increase the likelihood of developing it.

Early onset of menstruation

Starting periods at a younger age may be associated with increased risk.

Short menstrual cycles

More frequent menstrual cycles may increase the number of menstrual episodes over time.

Heavy menstrual bleeding

A history of particularly heavy periods may be associated with endometriosis.

Certain reproductive and menstrual patterns

Factors that increase the frequency or duration of menstrual exposure have been associated with greater risk.

Genetic and immune factors

Research suggests that genetic susceptibility and immune-system dysregulation may play a role. However, the exact cause remains uncertain.

Having a risk factor does not mean that you have endometriosis. Likewise, not having a known risk factor does not rule it out.

Who Is at High Risk?

You should be particularly attentive to the possibility of endometriosis if you have several of the following patterns:

  • A close family member with endometriosis
  • Severe period pain that disrupts normal life
  • Pain that continues between periods
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Recurring pain during bowel movements
  • Cyclical urinary pain
  • Persistent bloating or digestive symptoms around menstruation
  • Difficulty conceiving
  • Symptoms that repeatedly return despite basic pain management

A particularly important warning sign is period pain that prevents you from working, studying, sleeping, exercising or carrying out your normal activities.

That should not simply be normalized as part of being a woman.

Why Does the Body Curl Up During an Endometriosis Flare?

There is another interesting part of the story.

When pelvic pain becomes severe, many women naturally bend forward, pull their knees toward the abdomen, hold their stomach or avoid movement.

This is the body’s protective response to pain.

Persistent pain can also lead to muscle guarding and pelvic muscle tension, potentially adding another layer to the discomfort.

This does not mean muscle tension causes endometriosis.

It means that chronic pain can influence the way the entire body moves, rests and responds.

That is why good care should look beyond the painful area alone.

How Does Ayurveda Look At Endometriosis?

Dr. M. A. Chaudhary’s Ayurvedic Perspective.

Ayurveda does not have a direct ancient disease name that can simply be declared equivalent to modern endometriosis.

Therefore, saying “endometriosis is exactly this Ayurvedic disease” would be an oversimplification.

Instead, Ayurveda provides a framework for understanding the individual’s overall physiological pattern.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, attention may be given to:

Agni
The digestive and metabolic functions of the body.

Vata and Apana Vata
Traditionally associated with movement, elimination and functions related to menstruation and the pelvic region.

Artava
The Ayurvedic concept associated with menstrual and reproductive physiology.

Ahara and daily routine
Food habits, meal timing, digestion, sleep, activity and lifestyle.

Mala and elimination
Bowel regularity and other aspects of elimination.

Overall nourishment and strength
How well the body is maintaining its physiological functions.

These are traditional Ayurvedic concepts, not scientifically established causes of endometriosis.

The Ayurvedic objective is therefore not to force a modern diagnosis into an ancient disease category.

It is to understand:

“What is happening in this particular person?”

Why Doesn’t One Remedy Work For Every Woman?

Consider two women with the same diagnosis.

Woman A may have severe menstrual pain along with constipation, bloating, irregular meals and poor sleep.

Woman B may have severe menstrual pain with heavy bleeding, fatigue, poor appetite and a completely different digestive pattern.

The diagnosis may be the same.

The person is not.

This is why an individualized Ayurvedic approach should not simply say:

“You have endometriosis, therefore take this one remedy.” The prescription should follow the person, not the diagnosis alone.

Endometriosis is more than painful periods. It can affect pain, menstruation, digestion, bowel and urinary function, sexual health, fertility, energy and emotional wellbeing. So if your body repeatedly sends the same signals every month, don’t simply silence the signal and move on.

Listen to it.

Get an appropriate medical evaluation.

Understand your diagnosis.

And if you choose Ayurveda, approach it responsibly, individually and alongside appropriate medical care when needed.

Because the goal should not simply be: “How can I suppress this symptom?”

The better question is:

“What does my complete health pattern tell me, and how can I support my body more intelligently?”

The disease name may be the same. The person is not. Your symptoms are telling a story. The first step is learning how to read it.

Dr. Chaudhary’s Simple Supportive Home Remedy…

For a simple supportive home remedy, one traditional option is fresh ginger warm water.

Ginger Warm Water

Ingredients:

  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 1 cup, approximately 200 to 250 ml, water

Preparation:
Boil the ginger in water for approximately 5 to 7 minutes. Strain and drink warm.

It may be used around the menstrual period if it is comfortable and well tolerated.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, ginger is traditionally considered warming and supportive of digestion and Vata-related discomfort.

However, this should be understood as supportive care for menstrual discomfort, not a proven cure for endometriosis.

Research on ginger has shown potential for reducing menstrual pain in primary dysmenorrhea, but that evidence should not be interpreted as proof that ginger treats or eliminates endometriosis itself.

Avoid or seek professional advice before using ginger medicinally if you have a condition or medication that makes it unsuitable, particularly if you are pregnant, preparing for fertility treatment, have significant bleeding, or take medicines that may interact with concentrated herbal preparations.

And remember: A home remedy may support symptoms. It should never replace appropriate evaluation and treatment of endometriosis.

Root Cause Healing: Looking Beyond the Diagnosis

This is where the philosophy behind the Root Cause Healing Treatment Program by Dr. M. A. Chaudhary becomes relevant.

Root Cause Healing does not mean claiming that one herb can magically remove endometriosis.

It does not mean abandoning appropriate medical treatment.

And it does not mean promising a guaranteed cure.

Instead, it means looking at the whole health pattern of the individual.

1. Understand

Understand the complete picture:

Menstrual history, pain pattern, digestion, appetite, bowel habits, sleep, lifestyle, stress, energy, reproductive history, previous treatments, medicines and available reports.

2. Identify

Identify the individual’s Ayurvedic pattern and the factors that may require attention.

3. Correct

Work on appropriate foundations such as diet, digestion, bowel regularity, sleep, daily routine, physical activity and other individualized factors.

4. Support

Where appropriate, personalized Ayurvedic medicines, herbs or therapies may be considered based on the person’s individual needs, health status and treatment circumstances.

5. Monitor and Modify

Observe the response and modify the approach according to changing symptoms, tolerance and progress.

This is not about finding the strongest remedy.

It is about finding the appropriate approach for the individual.

Don’t Just Ask, “Which Medicine Is Good For Endometriosis?”

Ask better questions.

  • How severe is the pain?
  • When does it occur?
  • What happens to digestion around menstruation?
  • Are bowel movements regular?
  • How is sleep?
  • Is there heavy bleeding or fatigue?
  • Are there fertility concerns?
  • What treatments have already been tried?
  • What does the overall health pattern look like?

That is where individualized care begins.
