The Role of Kidneys – Nature’s Most Intelligent Filters

Each kidney has about one million nephrons, which are microscopic filters that purify nearly 180 liters of blood every day. They remove toxins, regulate electrolytes, and maintain the balance of water, salts, and minerals.

When these nephrons become blocked by toxins, drug residues, uric acid crystals, or metabolic wastes, filtration slows down. As waste products accumulate, the blood becomes toxic, causing swelling, fatigue, nausea, and raised creatinine or urea levels.

Ayurveda calls this state Vrikka Vikara, or degeneration of the kidney tissue due to Kapha and Vata imbalance combined with Ama obstruction.

1. Vata Dosha (Air and Space Element): When aggravated, Vata dries and weakens the tissues, leading to contraction of kidney channels and decreased filtration capacity. This corresponds to reduced GFR and poor urine output.

2. Pitta Dosha (Fire Element): Excess Pitta increases internal heat and inflammation in nephrons, similar to glomerular inflammation or nephritis in modern terms.

3. Kapha Dosha (Water and Earth Elements): Aggravated Kapha causes sluggish metabolism, fluid retention, and accumulation of sticky toxins (Ama), which block the Mutravaha Srotas and cause nephron obstruction.

The combined imbalance of Vata and Kapha, along with Ama, forms a sticky, toxic layer around nephrons, blocking their function. This is what modern science observes as nephron damage, poor filtration, or kidney failure.

If left untreated, this obstruction can lead to uraemia (toxins in blood), edema, and eventually total renal shutdown.

According to Dr M. A. Chaudhary, body is a network of Srotas (micro and macro channels) through which nutrients, energy, and waste flow. The kidneys belong to the Mutravaha Srotas, supported by Medovaha Srotas (fat metabolism) and Raktavaha Srotas (blood purification).

When the Srotas become blocked due to Ama (metabolic toxins) or excess Kapha, filtration slows down. In such cases, Ayurvedic detoxification (Panchakarma and herbal diuretics) aims to reopen these blocked Srotas, ensuring free flow of urine and toxins.
